Working in an early years provision, it is clear to see that motivating boys is a challenge that is faced on a daily basis. This is backed up by statistics – both nationally and locally – that boys underachieve, mainly in literacy.
It has been found that:
- Boys are most engaged when they are physically active.
- Boys are hands-on learners.
- Boys will learn their letters and numbers better through hands on activities.
It is really important to ensure there are opportunities for literacy and maths development in all aspects and areas of the provision – it is unlikely that boys are going to develop to their full potential in just a mark making area. You must make literacy and maths fun, stimulating – and mostly – physically active.
A great – and affordable – training course that goes into more detail is available from the NDNA here. It gives practical activities to do in your setting and helps you consider how gender neutral each area is within the provision.
